General Discussion / Re: Monster PCs as mercenaries
« on: January 17, 2019, 02:12:20 am »
look basically its all about impressions and influence.

to the average commoner. If they see an orc strolling down the street, they will freak out. most commoners rarely meet monsters. they only hear old wives' tales about how X monster killed and ate Y's baby.  most commoners however will probably flee or gather a pitchfork wilding mob to deal with it.

Now if that monster is being escorted. Say by 3 knights. who walk down the street with this monster in tow, speakin out saying: "calm everyone its all under control. nothing to fear" They will receive a very different reaction. Due mainly to the fact that thier faction bears a lot of influence and trust.

If the Arcanists did this people would probably avert their eyes and hurry away in case the whole thing exploded and demonic rifts opened.

The point is monsters will be treated as vile dirt.  Unless someone backs them up by exerting in game influence.  Will this influence work? maybe...
you may walk through the streets 3 times uneventfully but on the fourth time a guardsman whose fed up and had enough of your monster sauntering through the street will have a crack.
And be lawfully entitled to do so..

Ineveitably it is a high stakes risk.  If you fail it will cost you your life.

Feedback and Bugs / Re: The death penalty destroys fun.

.... but happened over trivial mistakes or not knowing every enemy in the game and all their abilities ...

Honestly this is a meta-gaming problem. The reality is your character should not know what that creature is and should be taking extreme care when they encounter a new monster. you should not be aware of what its abilities are and should be roleplaying this accordingly.

We do however understand that you, as a player, cannot turn of mechanical knowledge of the system hence why there is no action/penalty for metagaming the "new encounter" per se.

After a quick read my only note to add please keep the vision of the server in mind when contemplating responses.

Our vision is to be as inclusive of all play styles as possible, however , having said that we are still a "full roleplay server." and not an MMO or an action server. They aim of all our content to to help facilitate roleplay.  Every addition/removal/modification of content is considered with the aim of pushing players to interact/roleplay with each other.   This is what will define any hard/borderline choices we make as a team.

all I can say to all of these posts is "invest in invisibility potions. and learn when its time to use them."
While I personally would welcome the changes that made you perma dead if you died within 24 hours of a previous death. AS this would encourage a greater turnover of new characters and concepts. It is not a widely popular position as many people are invested in their characters and their stories and would be more upset about having their stories cut short.

The other issue touched on here is how hard it is to grind your way back upto where you were. (XP wise)
We are currently looking at every quest and reveiwing rewards and balanace etc. However all of this takes time.

Netherese Library / Re: Research: Menner and Blackthorne
« on: December 19, 2018, 06:23:03 am »
After an exhaustive search the librarian returns with a small footnote in a historical cultural essay that mentions an ancient Magus who originally scouted the lands that are now Hadrian.

He and three companions, Praxia, Umber and Romulous set out from an unknown place and came to this region. Blackthorne was said to be attempting to reach the status of archmage however this was before enclaves existed. A small notation is made noting that Blackthorne was potentially responsible for discovering the wealth in the patrician peaks.

General Discussion / Re: Death penalties
« on: December 02, 2018, 03:36:58 am »

People treat, IG, death as a minor annoyance, the current death penalty doesn't change that - making it worse won't change that, and making it easier won't change that. When it comes to Roleplay it needs to be instead on the onus of people playing to show the results of coming from near death. Or - change it so no one actually "dies" unless they're perma'd, and instead are considered to be at the brink of death, or downed, or whatever terminology you use.

Death isn't scary right now because you can get back up, its just annoying, from a purely OOC perspective, that a player's time was wasted.

Now out of curiosity here.  What would you feel would make death more terrifying?  we want people to fear death to a certain point. so how far should we go? (in a hypothetical discussion here) because for now there is no plan to change the death penalty.  this does not mean we wont. we are always open to suggestions and ideas.

So would you fear death more if we made the XP loss greater?
What about if we made it perma death unless you got a rez from a cleric (npc or pc)?
What if we took away the death penalty all together?

If you die from a mechanical bug like a lag spike. That's totally out of your control,
I do not think there is a single DM that won't give you a free rez. A polite request on the DM channel or on discord should see you sorted out.

we are talking about when you make choices to go into dangerous situations and it backfires and you end up dead.

so you are deciding not to adventure because you fear death...

Is this not how you view real life?

I want to honestly know why people have the conception that their characters SHOULDN'T fear death?
Death should be a terrifying experience. The fact that you are getting hacked to pieces by blood thirsty Orcs or your innards chewed into mush by ravenous zombies
is supposed to be terrifying.

Im going to say this once.

IC stays IC.. do NOT let IC actions spill over into OOC actions.

General Discussion / Re: DM plots and feeback
« on: November 14, 2018, 09:55:05 am »
since i've been named here Ill add my two shineys.

Every event I run is connected to a long plot line.  I set up each event usually on the back of players initiating an action or triggering an npc reaction.
Every event I run, no matter how inconsequential it may seem to the player, I attempt to weave hints and plot hooks that players can follow up to lead them to the over arching plot line.

Are they always successful? nope... on two separate occasions ive had the same plot line fail due to lack of player pickup/interest.  So it goes.
Secondly. It may appear that my event is a one shot, this is intentional. this allows random players to blow in and out of the plot without disrupting the arc. and having the plot stall because X player has something Y needs and they cant continue without it.

Third point.. time zones are a bitch.  so yes the reality is certain players will see more activity from me than others purely by being awake at the right time

Netherese Library / Re: Research: Stolen sword of House Dukarrus
« on: October 01, 2018, 11:02:21 am »
The only reports logged at the library are an old veterans journal noting  the last known location of the Sword was said to be carried by a Dukarrus man at arms attempting to flee an ambush, It is believed he fled into the sewers.

General Discussion / Re: Disc: DM events - Party comp.
« on: September 29, 2018, 11:01:31 am »
Im of two minds.

If i set up an event its usually to do with a plot ive been brewing for a while.. (this is mainly because my time is limited)
therefore there will be a few characters that have key information for said plot and i leave it to those who have staked most on doing the legwork building up to the event to chose who will come with them.

The other events I run are small quick little encounters to drop plot hooks and feed information on larger plots into the player base.
These events I dont really care who shows up because The whole point of the event is to -distribute- plot information to a wider audience.

In any such cases its the players choice to decide if they attend or not and how they behave, I will simply reward them accordingly with alignment shifts, npc reactions and faction reactions.  I am not above asking a player the reasoning behind why they chose to hang out with thier enemy, as a dm its easy enough to ask first.

As a team I can definitely say nearly every event run is open to any and all. The DM team attempts to always be inclusive as a general mandate.  Just be fair warned that if you go along with something in character that goes against your moral code or your evil overlords wishes, you -should- expect consequences

General Discussion / Re: pvp discussion
« on: September 21, 2018, 06:17:38 am »
Our PvP rules are in place and will not be changed at any time in the foreseeable future. We had to make them as they are now because the community showed time and time again that they could not handle PvP in a positive and mature way. Until we see a change that shows this is no longer true, the rules as they are now will remain.

perhaps this thread should be discussing how we as a communinity can improve our maturity in regards to pvp.

OK let me address a few points here before you all fly of f the handle with this..

I stated I will continue to set npc difficulty by assessing the characters strengths.  One of those components to measure thier strength is how much access they have to consumables,
Its not the be all and end all of my decision making process. other factors like party size. party level. magic loot all come into play

I will ASK the question why you have a bunch of unspent gold.  This does not mean i will act on it.  But i will present the player with deliberate hard choices.
DO i keep saving my gold for whatever I want to buy, risking death because i dont have supplies? Or do I take the set back in my savings to make the risk less?

How the hell this is constituted as bullying is far beyond my ken. Though if you have an issue with how I run events then by all means go and do something else, I wont hold it against you.
If you believe I am bullying anyone please feel free to bring it up with me or if that makes you uncomfortable any of the DM team.

As always I will strive to run entertaining and challanging enounters for the players, I wont always get the balance right. Im human.
